These instructions are intended for organisations where software installation and updates are managed centrally and users do not have permission to install or update Storegate Cloud Folder themselves.

Storegate Cloud Folder version 5 is distributed as an MSIXBundle package. MSIX cannot be deployed using the traditional Software Installation feature in Group Policy in the same way as an MSI package.

For centralised installation using GPO, we therefore recommend provisioning Storegate Cloud Folder system-wide using a PowerShell startup script.

Before you begin

The following applies to Storegate Cloud Folder 5:

  • New installation of version 5.x: install the MSIXBundle package.

  • Upgrade from 5.x to a later 5.x version: install the new MSIXBundle package.

  • Upgrade from 4.x to 5.x: first uninstall version 4.x, then install version 5 using the MSIXBundle package.

  • Some connection modes also require the Storegate Cloud Folder Support Package to be installed.

1. Download Storegate Cloud Folder

The latest production version is available here:

https://secure1.storegate.com/public/storegatecloudfolder/windows/StoregateCloudFolder.msixbundle

Download the package and place it on a network share that the client computers have read access to.

Example:

\\SERVER\Software\Storegate\StoregateCloudFolder.msixbundle

If the installation runs as a computer startup script, the computer accounts need read access to the network share. In an Active Directory environment, this can be granted to the Domain Computers group, for example.

2. Create a PowerShell startup script

Create a file, for example:

Install-StoregateCloudFolder.ps1

with the following content:

$PackagePath = "\\SERVER\Software\Storegate\StoregateCloudFolder.msixbundle"

$LogPath = "$env:WINDIR\Temp\StoregateCloudFolder-msix.log"

if (-not (Test-Path -LiteralPath $PackagePath)) {

    Write-Error "Storegate Cloud Folder package could not be found: $PackagePath"

    exit 1

}

try {

    Add-AppxProvisionedPackage `

        -Online `

        -SkipLicense `

        -PackagePath $PackagePath `

        -LogPath $LogPath `

        -ErrorAction Stop | Out-Null

    exit 0

}

catch {

    Write-Error "Storegate Cloud Folder could not be installed: $($_.Exception.Message)"

    exit 1

}

Change $PackagePath to point to the network share containing the installation package.

Add-AppxProvisionedPackage provisions Storegate Cloud Folder on the computer for all users. The application is registered for each user when they sign in.

3. Add the script to Group Policy

Open Group Policy Management and create or edit the GPO to be used for Storegate Cloud Folder.

Link the GPO to the OU containing the computers where Storegate Cloud Folder is to be installed.

Then go to:

Computer Configuration

  > Policies

    > Windows Settings

      > Scripts (Startup/Shutdown)

        > Startup

Add Install-StoregateCloudFolder.ps1 as a PowerShell startup script.

The installation will then run in the computer context at startup and does not require the signed-in user to have local administrator rights.

Network access at startup

If the installation package is stored on a network share, we recommend enabling the following policy:

Computer Configuration

  > Policies

    > Administrative Templates

      > System

        > Logon

          > Always wait for the network at computer startup and logon

Set the policy to Enabled.

This ensures that the computer has network access before the startup script attempts to read the installation package.

Upgrading from Storegate Cloud Folder 5.x

When a new version of Storegate Cloud Folder 5 is released, use the same installation method as for a new installation.

  • Download the new StoregateCloudFolder.msixbundle.

  • Replace the package in your central software distribution.

  • Deploy the new version using Add-AppxProvisionedPackage.

  • The user needs to sign out and sign in again after the update has been provisioned. Restarting the computer also works.

If Storegate's automatic updates are not used, the organisation's IT administrator is responsible for deploying new versions in this way.

It is not necessary to uninstall an earlier version of 5.x before installing a newer version of 5.x.

Upgrading from Storegate Cloud Folder 4.x

Storegate Cloud Folder 4.x uses an MSI-based installation and must be removed before version 5 is installed.

For a centrally managed upgrade from 4.x to 5.x, proceed as follows:

  • Uninstall 4.x using the MSI-based installation method used in your organisation.

  • Install Storegate Cloud Folder 5 using StoregateCloudFolder.msixbundle.

  • If required, install the Storegate Cloud Folder Support Package as described in the section below.

If version 4.x has already been deployed using GPO, the existing MSI deployment can be used to uninstall version 4.x.

Once version 4.x has been removed, install version 5 using:

Add-AppxProvisionedPackage `

    -Online `

    -SkipLicense `

    -PackagePath "\\SERVER\Software\Storegate\StoregateCloudFolder.msixbundle"

For centralised deployment following these instructions, the MSIXBundle package must be used to install version 5.

Storegate Cloud Folder Support Package

Storegate Cloud Folder also includes the following installation package:

Storegate Cloud Folder Support.msi

The Support Package installs components required for connection modes that use the legacy file system driver.

For an unattended installation for all users, the following command can be run after installing Storegate Cloud Folder:

msiexec /i "$((Get-AppxPackage -AllUsers com.storegate.folder).InstallLocation)\Setup\Storegate Cloud Folder Support.msi" /qn /l*v "$env:TEMP\StoregateCloudFolder-support.log" ALLUSERS=1 REBOOT=ReallySuppress

The Support Package is included in the Storegate Cloud Folder installation and does not need to be downloaded separately.

Allow installation of trusted MSIX packages

On Windows 11 and modern versions of Windows 10, installation of trusted MSIX packages is normally allowed.

In environments where this is managed centrally using Group Policy, the administrator should check that installation of trusted apps has not been blocked.

The setting is located under:

Computer Configuration

  > Administrative Templates

    > Windows Components

      > App Package Deployment

        > Allow all trusted apps to install

If this policy is used in your organisation, it must allow installation of trusted packages.

Verify the installation

To check that Storegate Cloud Folder has been provisioned on the computer, run the following command in PowerShell:

Get-AppxProvisionedPackage -Online |

    Where-Object { $_.DisplayName -eq "com.storegate.folder" }

To check the installed version:

Get-AppxPackage -AllUsers com.storegate.folder |

    Select-Object Name, Version, InstallLocation

Troubleshooting

The installation log from Add-AppxProvisionedPackage is located at:

C:\Windows\Temp\StoregateCloudFolder-msix.log

If installation fails, check the following:

The client computer has read access to the network share.

The MSIXBundle file can be accessed from the client computer.

Installation of trusted MSIX packages is not blocked by your organisation's policies.

Storegate Cloud Folder is not being used by a signed-in user during an upgrade.

When upgrading, we recommend deploying the package at computer startup, before the user signs in.

Please note

Storegate Cloud Folder version 5 must not be deployed using:

Computer Configuration

  > Software Settings

    > Software installation

This feature is intended for MSI-based installation packages and does not have built-in support for MSIX/MSIXBundle.

Instead, Storegate Cloud Folder 5 must be deployed system-wide using Add-AppxProvisionedPackage.
